This study analyzes severe dengue cases in Brazilian ICUs from 2012-2024, identifying risk factors for complications and proposing a predictive tool for early intervention.
Dengue fever is a significant health concern in Brazil, which accounted for 71% of global cases in 2024. This study examined patients with severe dengue admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) across Brazil over a 12-year period. Researchers identified several risk factors that increase the likelihood of complications, including being over 80 years old, having chronic kidney disease or liver cirrhosis, and abnormal blood cell counts. A new tool was developed to predict which patients might develop complications, helping healthcare providers intervene early to improve patient outcomes.
